October Monthly Briefing
Brought to you by Render Capital
Karla Valdivieso, CEO of Shappi, pitching at Venture Atlanta
Who We Are
Based out of Southern Indiana and Louisville, Kentucky. Render Capital invests in early-stage companies across the Midwest and South(avoiding NY/SF/Boston), spanning multiple industries to build a robust and diverse portfolio.
Render Captial is dedicated to investing in companies transforming legacy industries and archaic models by making emerging technologies accessible. These industries represent a substantial part of the Midwest and Southern economies, providing significant opportunities for growth and innovation. By supporting businesses that drive this democratization, we aim to generate strong returns while capitalizing on the potential of these vital regions.
What’s Going On
This month’s focus is on warehousing, a common practice for emerging VCs, especially those raising their first fund. Warehousing allows VCs to transfer their early angel investments into their new fund portfolio, showcasing the kinds of high-potential companies they aim to pursue. This tactic helps emerging fund managers build credibility with LPs by presenting strong, existing investments. Through a transparent, documented process, managers transfer shares at cost and with CEO approval, creating a foundation of promising investments that appeal to prospective LPs while aligning with fiduciary standards.
Where We’ll Be
What We’re Reading
Venture Capital’s “Crisis”: The venture capital industry is facing a shift as market conditions have worsened, leading firms like CRV to return uninvested funds due to overvalued startups and fewer exit opportunities. During the pandemic, low interest rates created a temporary boom, but with rising rates and inflation, the industry is now struggling to maintain high returns. While some VCs hope that AI and other emerging technologies will provide growth, many are reassessing their strategies in light of economic uncertainty and fewer large-scale exits.

This shift offers a new frontier for user engagement and accessibility in design.

Incerto Series by Nassim Taleb - Explores themes of uncertainty, risk, and probability, applying these concepts to finance, business, and everyday life. Consisting of five books—Fooled by Randomness, The Black Swan, Antifragile, Skin in the Game, and The Bed of Procrustes—the series examines how unpredictable events ("black swans") shape history and systems, and how individuals or societies can benefit from being "antifragile," or able to thrive under volatility. Taleb advocates for skeptical, risk-aware approaches to life and decision-making.
